Pre and post sedation instructions
Pre sedation instructions
Please arrive in good time for your appointment (at least 15 minutes beforehand)
Please wear comfortable clothes with loose sleeves allowing access to the elbow region.
If you wear contact lenses, please bring your container with you as you may be asked to remove your lenses.
Please do NOT eat or drink for 2 hours before your appointment unless instructed otherwise by your sedation practitioner.
However, you may drink water up to 2 hours before your appointment when thirsty.
You MUST take any regular medication, with sufficient water to swallow it, unless instructed not to do so by your sedation practitioner. If you are unsure, please contact the clinic beforehand.
Please arrange for a RESPONSIBLE ADULT to escort you home by car or taxi and stay with you for a few hours. This person must arrive with you and remain on the premises whilst you are undergoing your treatment.
The General Council regulations do not allow us to send a patient home on their own.
In our experience, it would be unwise to work, drive any vehicle or take part in any important decision making for the rest of the day.
POST-INTRAVENOUS SEDATION INSTRUCTIONS
For 24 hours after the sedation, please do not return to work, drive any vehicle or operate any machinery, drink alcohol, cook – including using hot kettles, make very important decisions or sign any legal document.
If you are taking regular medication, ask your dentist/sedation practitioner when you should continue to take them.
For PAIN RELIEF you may take whichever over-the-counter painkiller you normally would. UNLESS your dentist or sedationist has instructed you otherwise.
The sedation may produce AMNESIA, this is temporary, lasting sometimes a few hours.
You may have clear fluids when instructed to do so by the sedationist or surgeon. If you feel fine after having clear fluids, you may then progress onto solids.
You may feel tired and/or low for 24 hours after the sedation.
We do not anticipate you having any medical problems, but should you become concerned about anything, however trivial it may seem CONTACT us on 01183 150 252 during office hours for advice, but you remain under the care of your dentist, so please call them and/or follow their out of hours policy if you need aftercare.
